How Many Non-Armenian Foreigners Obtained Armenian Citizenship Last Year

According to a decree from the President of the Republic of Armenia, 20,884 individuals were granted Armenian citizenship last year. This was reported by the Migration and Citizenship Service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Armenia in response to a written inquiry from Sputnik Armenia.

“In the year 2023, a total of 19,185 applications were submitted for Armenian citizenship, of which 17,951 were foreign citizens of Armenian origin and 1,234 were foreign citizens of non-Armenian origin. Based on the presidential decree, 20,884 individuals were granted Armenian citizenship (including 19,839 foreign citizens of Armenian origin and 1,045 foreign citizens of non-Armenian origin),” the department emphasized.

It was also noted that in 2023, the applications of 253 foreign citizens of Armenian origin and 218 foreign citizens of non-Armenian origin for Armenian citizenship were rejected. In response to our question about the grounds for these rejections, the Migration and Citizenship Service referred to Article 13, Clause 7 of the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Armenia, emphasizing that the rejection of an application for Armenian citizenship may not necessarily be substantiated.

Overall, last year, the Armenian President's decree annulled the citizenship of 3,321 individuals.
