Armenian Foreign Ministry Comments on Aliyev's Statement About the Road to Nakhchivan
The Armenian Foreign Ministry has commented on Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s statement regarding the need for Yerevan to ensure uninterrupted communication for Azerbaijan to Nakhchivan via Meghri.
In an interview with local television, President Aliyev explicitly demanded a transit corridor through Armenian territory, stating that goods and people from Azerbaijan should pass without any checks; otherwise, the border with Armenia would not be opened.
“As part of the ‘Peace Crossroads’ project initiated by the Armenian government, all economic routes that the Armenian side proposes to restore or create have been presented,” the Armenian Foreign Ministry stated in response.
The Ministry also referred to a statement made by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan during a meeting of the Civil Contract party in Gavarr on January 13. It should be recalled that on that day, Pashinyan announced that Armenia was ready to provide Azerbaijan with connections to Nakhchivan through both railway and road options, similar to what Iran does.
The Prime Minister also emphasized that communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan should only be opened if the sovereignty and independence of the countries are not called into question afterward.
