Baltic States to Create Defensive Line at Border with Russia

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have reached an agreement to establish a "defensive line" along their border with Russia. This was reported by the Estonian Ministry of Defense. The information was relayed by TASS.

"The Baltic States have agreed to create a Baltic line of defense along the eastern border. It is extremely important to use time wisely to enhance readiness for defense," the ministry stated in a message posted on X.

The Estonian Ministry of Defense clarified that the agreement to create this line was signed on Friday in Riga by the heads of the defense departments of the three republics.

It is noted that the aim of creating a defensive zone consisting of various defense structures will be to deter and, if necessary, defend against military threats. In turn, the Estonian newspaper Postimees reported that Estonian authorities plan to build around 600 bunkers along the eastern border to protect against potential threats from Russia. These are necessary to defend Estonia's territory if needed, the publication cites the advisor to the Deputy Chancellor of the Ministry of Defense, Kaido Tiitus.

"Russia is and will remain the greatest threat to Estonia's security," he asserted.

The exact number of bunkers to be built will be determined during the work process, the publication notes, adding that the decision on the locations for these constructions will be made by the end of this year, and the installation of the structures will begin in the first half of 2025.
