Ferry Communication Has Not Generated Sufficient Interest, Minister of Economy

Maritime transportation has been conducted for several months, but has not garnered sufficient attention from exporters and importers. This was stated by Armenia's Minister of Economy Vahan Kerobyan during a press meeting on January 8.

Kerobyan announced that the ferry communication, which was intended to be an alternative to the Lars checkpoint and allow for cargo transportation to Russia, was launched but has been halted after several months of operation. According to him, ferry communication has not generated enough interest among exporters and importers.

“In our assessment, it has not generated sufficient interest from exporters and importers. And we have not seen that exporting and importing companies are utilizing this ferry in a way that would convince ourselves and our partners to continue this program,” he noted, adding that the main efforts should be directed towards activating exports to other countries.

According to him, the main focus will be on the Middle Eastern direction, the Gulf countries, as well as significant Asian, European, and American directions.

He also added that the Armenian authorities hope to select an operator for the “dry port” project and to establish an industrial park in Gyumri by the end of 2024.

“The ‘dry port’ project will ensure economically positive results. Its technical and economic justification has received a positive assessment and will be presented to the Public Investment Committee,” said Kerobyan.

After the approval of the project, the phase of preparing the public-private partnership agreement, announcing the competition, and several other activities will begin.
