Conditions of Azerbaijani Detainees Babirov and Akhyndov in Armenia Revealed

Azerbaijani detained servicemen Agshin Babirov and Huseyn Akhyndov have not been subjected to any physical or psychological pressure. This was stated by the Ministry of Justice of Armenia in response to a written inquiry from Sputnik Armenia.

Babirov and Akhyndov were convicted in Armenia for murder and illegally crossing the border. Following their return, Azerbaijani media released videos in which their relatives claimed that Babirov and Akhyndov had been subjected to violence and psychological pressure in Armenia.

Detained Agshin Babirov was taken to the "Yerevan-Center" penitentiary on April 13, 2023, while Huseyn Akhyndov was admitted on April 15, 2023. The Ministry of Justice of Armenia notes that the Azerbaijani detainees were visited by Armenia's Human Rights Defender Anahit Manasyan and staff from the Human Rights Defender's Office. Additionally, representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross have made eight visits (April 19, 2023, June 13, 2023, July 20, 2023, August 7, 2023, September 11, 2023, October 19, 2023, October 20, 2023, November 23, 2023).

“Agshin Babirov and Huseyn Akhyndov have been held in cell conditions, have not faced any living issues, and the cells are furnished with amenities and constant drinking water. The detainees have been provided with food, clothing, household items, bedding, and medication. The daily food expense for one detainee is 1,550 AMD,” the response states.
