VIDEO: Attempts to Storm City Hall - What Happened Last Night in Serbia
Mass protests have erupted in Belgrade against the victory of Aleksandar Vučić's party. Dissatisfied representatives of the opposition attempted to storm the city hall building last night. Protesters broke the glass doors of the building, prompting police to use tear gas, resulting in the arrest of over 30 demonstrators.
Extraordinary parliamentary and local elections were held in Serbia on December 17. The ruling coalition led by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić won the parliamentary elections, garnering around 47 percent of the votes. The coalition 'Serbia Against Violence' came in second, collecting 23 percent of the votes.
It is noted that approximately the same number of voters supported the two parties in Belgrade; about 38 percent of those who participated in the elections voted in favor of the presidential coalition, while slightly more than 34 percent supported the opposition.
Additionally, opposition groups have been protesting for the seventh consecutive day, demanding the annulment of the election results. They accuse the authorities of 'stealing votes', declaring that 'there can be no talk of the ruling coalition's victory in the Belgrade city council.'
President Aleksandar Vučić stated that around two and a half thousand people are participating in the protests. He described the scenes as 'dramatic' but assured that 'no revolution is taking place.'
