Charges Filed Against 4 Individuals as Fight Against Illegal Drug Trafficking Continues

On December 8, 2023, a citizen was arrested on Ashkhabadi Street in Yerevan based on immediate grounds for suspicion of drug possession and use. The individual was transferred to the Avan police department, where a personal search revealed a white crystalline substance wrapped in white paper. This was reported by the Investigative Committee.

An investigation has been initiated under Articles 393, Part 1, and 396, Part 1 of the Criminal Code of Armenia at the Avan and Nor Nork investigative divisions of the Investigative Committee of Yerevan. According to the conclusion of the designated forensic chemical examination, the crystalline substance, which weighed a total of 2.43 grams, is identified as the drug type “Methamphetamine.”

During the preliminary investigation, several instances of drug distribution were uncovered, revealing the identities of other individuals involved in illegal drug trafficking. Specifically, on December 8, 2023, the arrested citizen offered to sell “Methamphetamine” to an acquaintance via a messaging app. The acquaintance, complying with the offer, illegally acquired 2.43 grams of “Methamphetamine” and on the same day, sold it to the citizen for 70,000 AMD near his home in the village of Arinj, Kotayk Province.

Additionally, the investigation found that the acquaintance, having reached a prior agreement with another individual, went to the residence of G.A. in Sevan city, where G.A. intended to hand over 29.38 grams of “Methamphetamine” to M.K. for illegal sale, disguised within a package of fruits and preserves. However, the crime was not completed as the individual was arrested on December 15 for suspected criminal activity.

It was also established that M.K., during a yet undetermined period and under unknown circumstances, illegally acquired and kept at his home in Arinj village 4.12 grams of “Opium” for the purpose of illegal sale, which was discovered during a search conducted by the prosecuting authority on December 18, 2023.

Based on sufficient evidence obtained, the aforementioned four individuals have been charged accordingly. Detention has been applied as a measure to two of them, while the other two are under house arrest. The investigation is ongoing. Necessary measures are being undertaken to identify other possible individuals involved in illegal drug trafficking.
