Israel Rejects US Proposal on Future of Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu advocates for the idea of an indefinite occupation of the Gaza Strip as part of an ongoing operation against Palestinian militant group Hamas. This was reported by The Washington Post, citing a senior White House official.
According to the publication’s source, the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden is trying to persuade Israeli authorities to agree to a return of Palestinian autonomy to the enclave after the conflict ends. The official states that Netanyahu has firmly rejected this idea but did not specify who should govern Gaza.
“However, he put forward the idea of an indefinite Israeli occupation of the area,” the WP reports.
At the same time, the White House hopes that President Joe Biden’s pressure, who is popular among Israelis for supporting them after the Hamas attack on October 7, might influence Netanyahu and lead him to concede the issue of Palestinian autonomy.
