EU Has Provided More Assistance to Kyiv than the US, But It Is Uncertain Whether This Support Will Continue – Borrell
The European Union has provided overall more assistance to Ukraine than the United States. This was stated by the head of EU diplomacy, Josep Borrell, as reported by RIA Novosti.
According to him, EU countries have sent nearly €30 billion in military aid to Ukraine through bilateral agreements and the European Peace Facility. “Thanks to this aid, Ukraine was able to withstand. The US military assistance has been more significant than ours, but when we add up military, financial, economic, and humanitarian aid, then Europe has provided much greater support to Ukraine than the US,” Borrell noted while speaking at the Sommet Grand Continent conference.
He also raised the question of whether this aid would continue: “Will the EU’s unity on this issue continue? Will US assistance continue under a new president, and even before the elections... These questions need to be answered. We in Europe must respond, and in my opinion, we must stand by Ukraine's side, do more and do it quickly, as Russia poses a strategic threat to the EU,” the head of EU diplomacy stated.
Earlier, Russia had sent a note of protest to NATO countries for supplying Ukraine with ammunition. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that any cargo containing ammunition destined for Ukraine would become a legitimate target for Russia. The Russian Foreign Ministry has declared that NATO countries are playing with fire by supplying arms to Ukraine.
Additionally, Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov remarked that the West’s supply of weapons to Ukraine does not contribute to the success of Russian-Ukrainian negotiations and will have a negative impact.
