Khandanyan on the Return of Prisoners
The process of returning prisoners should take place in the very near future, stated Sargis Khandanyan, a member of the Civil Contract faction and Chairman of the National Assembly's Foreign Relations Committee, during a press briefing. However, he did not specify a specific date.
"There are no signals that Azerbaijan has abandoned its commitments; after all, this is a responsibility it has undertaken in writing," he noted, suggesting that there are certain organizational issues currently in progress.
Khandanyan mentioned, "We should expect that this will happen in the near future; however, considering the sensitivity of the issue, I would not want to discuss too many details publicly."
He also stated that after the return of this group of prisoners, Armenian soldiers will continue to remain in Baku and added that, "Armenia will continue its efforts to ensure that these individuals also return to Armenia."
It is important to recall that the office of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia and the office of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan issued a joint statement reaffirming their intention to regulate relations and reach a peace treaty based on the principles of respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. According to the statement, Azerbaijan will release 32 Armenian servicemen, while the Republic of Armenia will release 2 Azerbaijani servicemen in return.
