Ruling Power Attempts to Seize Authority in Alaverdi, Says Gegham Manukyan
Gegham Nazaryan, a member of the "Armenia" faction, raised a question to National Assembly President Alen Simonyan, expressing concern over reports coming from Alaverdi. He stated that the police are blocking access for employees of the Alaverdi municipality to their workplace. Nazaryan inquired whether Simonyan had contacted local authorities or the police to find out what was happening, to which the National Assembly president responded negatively.
In turn, Gegham Manukyan from the "Armenia" faction declared that the ruling power is attempting to seize authority in Alaverdi. The issue was addressed by Vahagn Aleksanyan, a member of the "Civil Contract" faction. He noted that in Alaverdi, the majority of the council, 14 out of 27 members, initiated a meeting to express no confidence in the mayor.
“When we speak about the local self-government, it is primarily about the council. The council has convened a meeting; the meeting is taking place, a vote is being conducted, but people have entered in a hooligan manner, overturned the ballot box with threats and insults. The police have fulfilled their duty. What’s more concerning is that some believe they can resolve issues by overturning a ballot box while ignoring the majority voice of the council,” said Aleksanyan.
