Russia to Reduce the Number of Labor Migrants in Moscow

The number of labor migrants in Moscow is significant, with the vast majority of foreign citizens working in sectors where local residents are unwilling to engage. Authorities plan to decrease their numbers in the future. This was stated by Vitaly Suchkov, head of the Department for National Policy and Inter-Regional Relations of Moscow, as reported by RIA Novosti.

"It is no secret that the number of migrants in the capital is considerable. Thus, an objective situation is created where, for the continuous and dynamic development of the megacity, primarily for the interests of its residents, additional labor resources are necessary today. At the same time, the overwhelming majority of foreign citizens work in sectors where there is a significant lack of local interest in finding jobs in such areas, primarily in construction, road works, and cleaning of territories," Suchkov said during the XI International Scientific and Practical Conference titled 'Unity in Diversity: The Vector of Moscow's Development Strategy until 2030.'

He noted that Moscow is also an attractive city for residents of other regions of Russia. "However, in the medium term, the overall priority for the capital's authorities is the gradual reduction of the share of workers brought in from other countries, and this is enshrined in our strategic provisions," the department head added.
