The Largest Strike in the Country's History: Protest Action in the Czech Republic Today

Today, November 27, trade unions in the Czech Republic are conducting a strike that will involve hundreds of businesses and companies, employing nearly 1 million workers, as well as 70% of the staff in educational institutions.

According to the leader of the Czech-Moravian Confederation of Trade Unions, Josef Stredula, the purpose of the strike is to "make the government of the republic consider what is happening in society." He emphasized, "If the country's authorities believe that such actions can be ignored and not noticed, then the public mood could worsen even further." Stredula stated that this will be the largest strike in the country's history.

The first supporters of the protest action are workers from the transportation sector, with some drivers not starting their routes since this morning.

It is noteworthy that the main grievance of the unions stems from a package of measures signed by President Petr Pavel aimed at state finance rehabilitation. This package includes cuts to state subsidies, the removal of certain tax benefits, an increase in VAT on several goods and services, and changes to pension payment deadlines.

According to unions and the opposition, these changes are expected to lead to inflation and reduce the standard of living for citizens.
