Former Officer Convicted in George Floyd's Murder Stabbed in U.S. Prison
Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, convicted for the murder of African American George Floyd, was stabbed in an Arizona prison. According to reports from AP, the incident occurred on November 24 in a federal prison located in Tucson, Arizona, where Chauvin is serving his sentence.
Sky News reported that a fellow inmate attacked the former officer, resulting in serious injuries. Chauvin's attorney, Greg Erikson, stated that he has not yet been able to establish contact with his client. The Federal Bureau of Prisons has not provided details about the incident.
Some sources suggest that the former officer may have died from his injuries; however, this information has not been officially confirmed. On November 25, Brian Evans, spokesperson for the Minnesota Attorney General's office, indicated that Chauvin is “expected to be alive.”
George Floyd died in May 2020 after Chauvin knelt on his neck for over eight minutes during an arrest. In 2021, a U.S. court sentenced the former officer to 22.5 years in prison for his role in the murder.
