VIDEO: Footage from the Opening Ceremony of the Sambo World Championship
The opening ceremony of the Sambo World Championship was held at the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex in Yerevan. Auroranews presents footage from the opening ceremony.
At the start of the ceremony, the features of the sport were showcased through dance and light displays, followed by the parade of flags from participating countries. The event was attended by Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports of Armenia Zhanna Andreasyan, Deputy Minister Karen Giloian, Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan, and President of the Armenian National Olympic Committee Gagik Tsarukyan.
Vasily Shestakov, president of the International Sambo Federation, greeted the attendees and noted that Yerevan would witness a true sports event over the coming days. The Sambo World Championship will conclude on November 12.
Notably, over 500 athletes from 70 countries are participating in this championship, with the total number of delegations exceeding 2500.
It is worth mentioning that Varzik Grigoryan, competing in the 54 kg weight category, won a bronze medal at the Sambo World Championship. In her opening match, Grigoryan lost to her Romanian opponent, but since the latter advanced to the finals, the Armenian sambist had the opportunity to compete for the bronze medal.
In the bronze medal match, Grigoryan triumphed over Ukrainian Snizhena Plishina, and she showcased strength against Bulgarian Tanya Radulova in her medal match. Earlier, bronze medals were also won by Arman Avanesyan (98 kg) and Sargis Vardanian (79 kg).
It is emphasized that the Sambo World Championship started in Yerevan on November 10 and will conclude on November 12.
