US Sends Nuclear Submarine to Persian Gulf for Strategic Deterrence

The Pentagon has deployed the USS Florida nuclear submarine to the Persian Gulf region as part of a show of force to deter Iran, according to Bloomberg, citing representatives from the US Department of Defense.

On November 5, the US Central Command announced via X (formerly Twitter) that the Ohio-class submarine had arrived in its area of responsibility. However, it did not specify whether it is equipped with nuclear-armed ballistic missiles. US officials told Bloomberg reporters that while the Florida is nuclear-capable, it does not carry nuclear weapons.

Prior to this, on October 31, the Pentagon had declared its readiness to take action if the attacks on US forces carried out with Iranian support continued. According to the Pentagon chief, American troops have faced multiple attacks from Iran-backed armed groups.

The arriving vessels in the Persian Gulf enhance the Department of Defense's efforts to deter Iran from carrying out attacks entrusted to it against Israel or further attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria. The deployment to the Persian Gulf marks at least the second such action this year.
