Putin: There Are No Obstacles to Signing a Peace Treaty Between Baku and Yerevan
Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that he does not see any reasons that might hinder the signing of a peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan following recent events in Nagorno-Karabakh. This was reported by interfax.ru.
President Putin remarked, "Nagorno-Karabakh became a part of Azerbaijan definitively after being recognized by Armenia last year. Previously, Baku and Yerevan have been close to an agreement multiple times, including the idea of a referendum, but the main issue has always been the status. Now, there are no obstacles to signing a peace treaty between Baku and Yerevan."
He added, “I believe this is entirely possible. I do not see any issue that could prevent the signing of a peace treaty now, after the events in Nagorno-Karabakh," he told reporters on Friday.
According to him, there are purely technical issues related to border demarcation and delimitation. "These are technical matters—100 meters on this side, 1 kilometer on the other side. That's already insignificant. I believe that with goodwill from both sides, all of this can be accomplished," Putin added.
It should be noted that Putin had announced earlier today at the CIS summit in Bishkek that Moscow is ready to organize negotiations between Baku and Yerevan for the further development of the peace plan.
Initially, he proposed a meeting at the level of the Foreign Ministers of Armenia and Azerbaijan to be held in Moscow. He emphasized that the end result should be a peace agreement.
Additionally, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov mentioned that Baku's position regarding the signing of the peace treaty is "entirely constructive." "Baku has a very constructive stance on this issue, while Yerevan has not yet made a final decision; we are waiting for a response," Peskov stated.
