Gaza's Hospitals at Risk of Becoming Morgues, ICRC Warns

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has warned that hospitals in Gaza are at risk of turning into morgues due to a lack of electricity. The only power plant in Gaza ran out of fuel on Wednesday, and backup generators may cease to operate in a matter of hours.

It should be noted that medical centers in Gaza are overwhelmed following Israel's 'massive strike' on Hamas-affiliated facilities. Israel has pledged not to restore electricity and to prevent humanitarian aid into the region until Hamas releases around 150 hostages taken during armed assaults on Saturday.

“As Gaza loses electricity, hospitals are losing power, putting newborns in incubators at risk and leaving elderly patients without oxygen. Without X-ray capability, the lives of patients undergoing kidney dialysis are also at risk,” stated ICRC regional director Fabrizio Carboni.

He added that hospitals are still operating on generators, but the fuel supply will only last for a few hours. According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the death toll from Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip has reached 1,417, with over 6,200 injured. In Israel, the latest reports indicate that 1,300 people have died due to the conflict, with nearly 3,300 injured.

It is important to recall that on the morning of October 7, Israel was subjected to an unprecedented rocket attack from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military press service stated that extremists launched more than 3,000 rockets. Additionally, dozens of terrorists infiltrated border areas in southern Israel.
