6.3 Magnitude Earthquakes in Afghanistan Result in Nearly 120 Deaths
Two earthquakes measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale have struck western Afghanistan, according to reports from the Associated Press citing the country's emergency management agency. Current reports indicate that nearly 120 people have died, with over a thousand injured, as reported by AFP, referencing Mosu Ashari, the head of the disaster management department in Herat province.
According to AP, the areas most affected by the earthquakes are four villages in the Zendajan district of Herat province. A resident of Herat, Abdullah Shakor Samadi, told the agency that at least five tremors were felt in the city. Due to the devastation, telephone communications have been disrupted in Herat, AP reported.
The Taliban government has urged local organizations to do their best to reach the affected areas quickly to provide assistance. They have also requested wealthy compatriots to offer any possible support to those impacted, the agency reports.
