Work Continues at the Armenian Nuclear Power Plant to Ensure International Standards, Says Sanosyan
During the entire operation of Armenia's nuclear power plant, regular work is being carried out to ensure the safe operation of the plant according to current international standards. This was stated by Armenia's Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, Gnel Sanosyan, during a Q&A session with the government in the National Assembly. He addressed Turkey's demand directed to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that the operation of the nuclear power plant should cease.
It should be noted that Turkey has also claimed that Armenia's nuclear plant is not safe because it was built during the Soviet era. Sanosyan emphasized that the nuclear power plant is a highly complex infrastructure, an important energy station, but the processes related to nuclear plants are relatively simple and clear. In other words, there are specific criteria, and there are groups of specialists who must certify whether the plant meets these criteria, after which a decision can be made about its operation.
“I assure you that since 1993, many programs and works have been implemented and continue to be implemented at our nuclear power plant to ensure operations in compliance with safety and existing international standards. Currently, our nuclear power plant has a license to operate until 2026, and in some areas, until 2031. Recently, the government adopted another decision, according to which a number of projects, already outlined, will be implemented in the coming years to extend the plant's operational lifespan until 2036,” said Sanosyan.
He emphasized that everything at the Armenian nuclear power plant is new, jokingly adding that this does not apply to the staff. At the same time, he noted that it may be beneficial for the workers not to be new, as experienced and skilled professionals are needed there who are adept at their work.
Sanosyan recalled that last year, Armenia hosted IAEA Director Rafael Grossi, who toured the plant and gave very positive feedback regarding its operations afterward.
He also informed that work is currently being conducted on the construction of a new energy block, and efforts are being made to study global practices, existing technologies, and the energy system's compliance with the proposed alternatives. The Minister assured that quite active work is being carried out, and solutions will be found in due course.
