Ratification of the Rome Statute Does Not Contradict Armenia or Russia's International Obligations, Says Vladimir Vardanyan
The ratification of the Rome Statute does not contradict the international obligations of Armenia or Russia. This was stated by Vladimir Vardanyan, the chairman of the National Assembly's Legal Affairs Committee, during a conversation with journalists.
According to him, by ratifying the document, Armenia has not only refrained from actions that contradict the legislation of the Republic of Armenia and the international obligations undertaken by the country but has also committed no act that would contradict the international obligations of the Russian Federation.
Vardanyan elaborated that the ratification of the document would allow for the guarantees of the rights of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh and ensure judicial protection of their interests. “In this case, the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh, as victims of a crime, need guarantees that their rights will be upheld at the international level, and this mechanism will guide us forward,” he said.
Vardanyan added that ratifying the Rome Statute provides a legal basis for investigating the types of crimes against humanity that have been perpetrated against the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.
