Hearings on Impeachment of Georgian President Begin at Constitutional Court
Hearings on the impeachment of Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili have begun at the country's Constitutional Court. A group of lawmakers from the ruling party, "Georgian Dream," has filed a lawsuit with the highest court.
Zurabishvili has not traveled to Batumi, where the court session is taking place, stating that she fully trusts her representatives.
The wealthy founder of "Georgian Dream," Bidzina Ivanishvili, accuses the president of violating the Constitution, as the Constitution stipulates that the president conducts foreign policy powers in agreement with the government. However, Zurabishvili has been holding meetings and negotiations abroad without the government's consent.
After the Constitutional Court's conclusion, the issue of removing the president from office will be discussed and put to a vote in parliament, where "Georgian Dream" does not have the necessary votes to unilaterally pass this issue.
