75 US Congress Members, Led by Nancy Pelosi, Call on Biden to Impose Sanctions on Azerbaijan
75 members of the US Congress have urged the presidential administration to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan, suspend military aid to Baku, provide humanitarian assistance to the forcibly displaced population of Nagorno-Karabakh, and deploy international observers in the Lachin Corridor.
The letter to President Joe Biden was initiated by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Congressman Anna Eshoo. The authors of the letter, consisting of members from both parties in Congress, condemned the 'unprovoked military attack' on Nagorno-Karabakh and the 'inhumane blockade', which left the local Armenian population with 'no choice but to flee.'
US lawmakers noted that despite alarms about the genocide threatening the population of Nagorno-Karabakh, a humanitarian disaster is occurring that could have been prevented. They proposed activating the amendment 907 of the Freedom Support Act, which prohibits the US government from providing military assistance to Azerbaijan. They also called for personal sanctions against Azerbaijani officials using the 'Magnitsky Act.'
Furthermore, the authors of the letter suggested providing humanitarian aid to the displaced population from Nagorno-Karabakh and urged the international community to engage in this process. Congress members also deemed it necessary to take measures to ensure the safe evacuation of the Nagorno-Karabakh population to Armenia, including the deployment of international observers in the Lachin Corridor. According to the authors of the letter, direct communication with Azerbaijan is also essential to secure amnesty for the authorities of Nagorno-Karabakh.
