European Union Increases Humanitarian Aid to Artsakh by 5 Million Euros
The European Union is increasing humanitarian funding to address the growing needs caused by the crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh by 5 million euros. This was announced by the European Commission.
“The escalation of the conflict and the subsequent ceasefire are expected to result in a mass exodus of people from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. Currently, around 13,500 refugees have already crossed the border,” states the announcement.
They emphasized that there is a severe shortage of food in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as a lack of access to electricity and water.
Of the 5 million euros in humanitarian funding, 500,000 euros is emergency assistance (as announced last week), and 4.5 million euros is new funding. The European Commission indicates that they are prepared to support people displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. This aid will be delivered by various EU humanitarian partners operating in Armenia and is expected to benefit around 25,000 individuals.
The priority will be to provide cash assistance, shelter, food, and other means of subsistence. Support is also planned for vulnerable groups within Nagorno-Karabakh. This aid will be channeled through the International Committee of the Red Cross, aiming to provide around 60,000 people with food, medical assistance, housing, and more.
The EU is also sending a humanitarian expert to the region, who will work on-site with humanitarian partners to ensure a rapid response to the crisis.
