Armenia Completely Abandons the Death Penalty Process
The National Assembly has approved the Protocol No. 13 on the Abolition of the Death Penalty in all circumstances, which is attached to the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms. The law will enter into force the day after its official publication.
The Protocol No. 13 was signed in Vilnius on May 3, 2002, and was ratified by the Republic of Armenia on May 19, 2006. Currently, 46 states have signed the Protocol, and it has entered into force for 44 states.
The ratification of the Protocol aligns with Armenia's policy as a state advocating for the complete abolition of the death penalty. It stipulates that the death penalty is abolished, and no one shall be sentenced to death or executed, with no reservations permitted regarding the provisions of the Protocol as per Article 57 of the Convention.
