How Much Territory Does Azerbaijan Control in Jermuk: Unofficial Report by Sputnik
Azerbaijan's armed forces have taken direct control of more than 70 square kilometers of territory in the direction of Jermuk following the aggression in September 2022, as evidenced by satellite images. This is reported by Sputnik Armenia.
“Official data indicates that Azerbaijan has occupied about 150 square kilometers of Armenian territory from 2021 to 2022, though the Armenian Ministry of Defense has not provided information on how much territory is specifically under Azerbaijani control in any given region,” the media outlet writes, reminding that in response to inquiries directed at the Ministry of Defense regarding whether Azerbaijan had made any advances towards Jermuk after September 2022, whether new positions were established in that area, and how many square kilometers of land are under Baku's control, the ministry responded: “Since September 2022, the Azerbaijani side has not made any advances towards Jermuk.”
The media continued: “If we compare the Sentinel-2 satellite images taken in October 2022 and August 2023, the engineering works and fortification of the positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces in this area are more than evident.”
“If we operate based on the former Soviet borders, approximately, the Azerbaijani armed forces directly control more than 70 square kilometers of territory in this area (referring to physical presence),” the site noted.
According to a statement made by the Chief of Staff of the Armenian Armed Forces, Edward Asryan, in April 2023, the area infiltrated by the adversary covers roughly 60 square kilometers, with a front line of about 11 km and a depth of 8 km.
