One of the Largest Cities in the UK Declared Bankrupt
The Birmingham City Council, one of the largest cities in the United Kingdom, has been declared bankrupt due to a significant budget deficit. This is reported by The Guardian, citing a statement from local authorities.
The city council has issued a statement that effectively reveals the local government's inability to balance its budget without external assistance. As a result, a freeze has been placed on all expenditures, except for the delivery of legally mandated services and costs related to existing contracts, according to the newspaper.
The council attributed its decision to long-standing challenges, including breaches of equal pay provisions and the consequences of new IT system implementations that have led to demands for resolution.
Previously, Birmingham had already imposed restrictions on non-essential spending due to a budget shortfall of £760 million (approximately $880 million), following the resolution of equal pay claims amounting to £1 billion (around $1.16 billion).
