Niger Restricts Operations of UN Agencies

The military authorities that seized power in Niger have announced a decision to suspend the operations of NGOs and UN agencies in areas designated as military operations zones.

"Considering the current security situation and the operations of the Nigerien armed forces, the activities of local and international NGOs, as well as UN agencies, are suspended in the areas of operations," the country's security forces stated.

In several regions of Niger, the military has been engaged in a prolonged struggle against extremist groups. The military explained that one of the reasons for their decision to seize power was the escalation of confrontations with militants.
