First Uterus Transplant Performed in Great Britain

A 40-year-old woman has donated her uterus to her younger sister in Great Britain, enabling her to carry and give birth to a child independently. This was reported by the Daily Mail.

The publication clarifies that British doctors have performed a uterus transplant for the first time. The surgery lasted 17 hours and was successful, with the donor organ now functioning well, giving the 34-year-old woman a significant chance of having a baby.

"I want to have as many children as possible," the woman has stated.

According to gynecologist-surgeon Richard Smith, prior to the surgery, the patient was unable to conceive due to a congenital absence of a uterus, although she still had ovaries. This allowed for the extraction of eggs, which were artificially fertilized through in vitro fertilization.

In the upcoming months, the embryos are expected to be transferred to the uterus. Doctors indicated that the success rate of the procedure is around 80 percent. Smith added that the delivery will take place via cesarean section at the 37th week of pregnancy, a period that avoids overloading the donor organ.
