Armenian Church in Turkey Recognized as a World Cultural Heritage Site

The Saint Cross Armenian Church on Akhtamar Island, located between Van and Bitlis provinces in Turkey, is the 84th cultural monument registered as part of UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list. This information was reported by Ermenihaber.am.

The church was constructed under the orders of King Gagik I of the Bagratid dynasty between the years 915 and 921, with the aim of preserving the relic of the Holy Cross. This relic had been brought to Van after being in Jerusalem and then in Iran after the 7th century.

The church, built in the 10th century, is a vibrant example of medieval Armenian architecture. Designed by the well-known architect, painter, and sculptor Manuel, the Saint Cross church is renowned for its diverse sculptures.
