320 People Died on Our Roads Last Year: Arsen Torosyan

MP Arsen Torosyan writes on his Facebook page: “The recent news about road traffic accidents, which almost every day warns of casualties, should be a cause for deep concern for all of us. Extra efforts must be made to significantly reduce the number of casualties and injuries.

Three main factors affect road safety: the behavior of the driver, the condition of the vehicle, and compliance with standards, as well as road infrastructure (road surface, signage, including road markings, etc.). The state management system must improve road infrastructure, which has been intensively implemented in recent years, ensure a proper vehicle inspection system, and impose strict exams for obtaining driving rights, as well as strict monitoring of adherence to road traffic rules.

Drivers and other members of the public must also demonstrate the safest possible road behavior. In this regard, several key factors are crucial, such as not being distracted while driving (talking on the phone, smoking, etc.), not driving under the influence, not exceeding the established speed limit, and not driving erratically.

Last year, 320 people died on our roads. In absolute numbers, we have a positive dynamic compared to 2021, when we had 368 fatalities. However, with approximately 11 deaths per 100,000 population, we still have a lot of room for improvement. Many countries have 3-4 deaths per 100,000 residents, so we can and must strive to reach that situation. Let us all think in this direction, as no one is insured against this tragedy.
