IT Community Appeals to Chief Prosecutor to Change Preventive Measure for Sergey Smbatyan

The artistic director and chief conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Armenia, Sergey Smbatyan, has received support from representatives of the information technology sector. In a letter addressed to the Chief Prosecutor of Armenia, Anna Vardapetyan, IT community representatives have requested a change in the preventive measure imposed on Sergey Smbatyan to an alternative that is not detention.

The letter reads in full:

“We, the undersigned representatives of the IT sector, express our deep concern regarding the detention of Sergey Smbatyan, the artistic director and chief conductor of the State Symphony Orchestra of Armenia. We address you as individuals deeply specialized in the fields of technology and innovation and appreciate Maestro Smbatyan’s exceptional efforts and significant influence on Armenian musical art, which compels us to reassess the current situation. We acknowledge that the rule of law is of great importance in any society, and while we emphasize the necessity of conducting the examination of the case exclusively through legal means, we kindly request that you accept our letter as a plea and change the preventive measure imposed on Sergey Smbatyan to an alternative that is not detention.

Dear Chief Prosecutor, we ask and urge you to do everything possible to ensure that Maestro Smbatyan can continue his pioneering work in his field, undertaking revolutionary projects that honorably represent our country around the world.

We believe in democracy and justice. We have also been contacted by supporters from the technological sector and other concerned representatives of the country who believe that before choosing detention as a preventive measure, a proper examination should be conducted.”
