Department of Armenian Language and Literature Opens at Iran's Azad Islamic University
The Tehran central branch of Iran's Azad Islamic University has announced the opening of a Department of Armenian Language and Literature, with admissions being conducted without examinations. This was reported by Ermenihaber.
On July 24, the director of the National Research Institute of Iran, Ekber Babai, stated that according to Article 15 of the Iranian Constitution, only Armenians have the right to receive education in their native language. He also added that the mention of the teaching of local languages in this article has been misinterpreted, as it pertains only to Armenians, and not to Turks.
The news of the opening of the Department of Armenian Language and Literature has led to dissatisfaction in the Turkish press. It has been commented that Iran does not allow Azerbaijanis and Turkic-speaking Kurds living in the south to receive education in their own languages, while at the same time opening a department for Armenian language and literature at Azad Islamic University.
