Attempt to Escape Inmate by Cutting Bars Fails; Three Arrested

On July 26, 2023, around 00:30, three residents of Yerevan attempted to escape an inmate held in one of the cells of the Sevan division of the RA Police by cutting the bars with an iron cutting tool. However, their effort was unsuccessful. This information was reported by the Investigative Committee of the Republic of Armenia.

Specifically, during a routine inspection, an officer of the Sevan division noticed unusual and agitated behavior by the inmate through a viewing hole of the cell. Upon entering the cell to understand the reason for the behavior, the officer heard calls for the inmate's name from outside, as the window of the cell had been opened.

The officer immediately exited the cell, locked the door, and alerted the authorities regarding the situation. During a search of the area around the detention facility, a specially designed tool for cutting iron barriers, wrapped in a sheet, was discovered.

As a result of operational and investigative measures taken by the police, the suspects were located on Sayat Nova Street in Sevan city and were transported to the Sevan police division in a 'MAZDA 6 GRAND TOURING 2.5L' vehicle at around 01:30 on the same day. During a personal search, one of the suspects was found in possession of a black knife with a total length of 22 cm, featuring a 12 cm handle and a 10 cm blade.

A criminal case has been initiated at the Sevan Investigative Division of the Gegharkunik Regional Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee on July 26, 2023, under Article 44-475, Part 2 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia. An investigation is underway to clarify the circumstances of the incident. A decision has been made to arrest the three individuals involved.
