Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry Responds to Nikol Pashinyan's Interview

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry has responded to Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's interview with Le Monde, stating that the Armenian PM has once again expressed unfounded opinions regarding the situation in the region.

Forgetting about the trilateral agreement signed by their country's leader, according to which the Lachin corridor should only be monitored by Russian peacekeepers, the Azerbaijani side declared: "The Armenian side must understand that the establishment of a checkpoint by Azerbaijan in Lachin is entirely within the framework of international law; this step was taken to prevent Armenia's diversionary actions, and the existence of that checkpoint is not subject to discussion. The International Court of Justice unanimously rejected Armenia's claim in its decision from July 6, reaffirming that Azerbaijan's creation of a checkpoint at the border is an absolute sovereign and lawful decision."

It should be recalled that Pashinyan stated that the greatest obstacle to peace today is Azerbaijan's aggressive and unlawful actions around Nagorno-Karabakh—specifically in the Lachin corridor—as well as at Armenia's borders. Regarding the Azerbaijani side's statement about the international court's decision, it is noteworthy that Azerbaijan is once again distorting the facts, as the International Court of Justice reaffirmed its ruling on July 6, obligating Azerbaijan to ensure unhindered access through the Lachin corridor.
