The Day of 'Geopolitical Judgment' Has Come for Armenian Statehood: Davit Babayan
“Michel's latest statement is filled with terrible and unacceptable phrasing,” wrote Davit Babayan, advisor to the President of Artsakh, on his Facebook page.
“However, we should not blame anyone, especially we should not present any demands to anyone but ourselves. After all, there is no basis for Yerevan to recognize Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan, and there can be none. This is simply a disgrace and a license for Azerbaijan's aggression. Yes, the day of 'geopolitical judgment' has come for Armenian statehood,” he wrote.
According to him, there is a court ruling to open the Lachin corridor, yet Charles Michel welcomes Azerbaijan’s willingness to facilitate a route through Aghdam, which he described as disgraceful. Babayan also mentioned this in an interview with a Factor journalist.
“Charles Michel’s latest statement is filled with terrifying and unacceptable phrasing; do you understand this is an absolutely disgraceful phenomenon? Instead of exerting pressure and stating 'open Lachin,' there is an international court ruling. The issue of Aghdam should be discussed later. In other words, how do you envision—should Artsakh renounce its ties with Armenia and join Azerbaijan?” he said. “Today, geopolitics has remained 'naked'; it has stripped off and thrown away all the 'clothes' such as democracy, human rights, justice.”
Babayan pointed out that this does not mean that everything is lost; rather, we must understand the situation correctly. “Most importantly, we should not blame anyone, neither Europe, nor even Turkey and Azerbaijan. Especially, we should not present any demands to anyone, but ourselves. After all, there is no basis for Yerevan to recognize Artsakh as part of Azerbaijan, and there can be none. This is simply a disgrace and a license for Azerbaijan's aggression. Yes, the day of 'geopolitical judgment' has come for Armenian statehood,” he added.
On July 15, a trilateral meeting took place in Brussels between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, President of the European Council Charles Michel, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
