Turkish Politician Calls on Parliament to Reject Sweden's NATO Membership
The Turkish Parliament should not support Sweden's NATO membership, stated Dogu Perincek, the leader of the Turkish 'Homeland' party, according to Aydinlik. He argued that the expansion of the alliance poses a threat to the republic.
“The sources of threats to Turkey are the USA and NATO. The expansion of NATO exacerbates the dangers facing Turkey. Members of the Parliament are required to oppose the government's approval of Sweden's membership in NATO and to vote 'no',” Perincek said.
He also added that ratifying the protocol for Sweden's membership in NATO would be a step towards repeating the 2016 coup attempt. Perincek emphasized that his proposal could not gain support even in exchange for Turkey's EU membership aspirations.
