Biden Discusses Security Guarantees for Ukraine
US President Joe Biden, in an interview with CNN, stated that Kyiv can only become part of NATO after the end of its military conflict with Russia. Until then, the regime in Kyiv will continue to receive support from allies.
The American leader is uncertain whether there is consensus within the military alliance on whether Ukraine should be admitted to the bloc during an intense armed conflict. “I have long spoken to Zelensky about this. One of the things I pointed out is that the US is ready to provide assistance as long as the process continues, and that will take some time. We are ensuring security, just as for Israel,” Biden explained.
A 10-year security agreement has been signed between Washington and Tel Aviv, under which the US is committed to providing $38 billion in military aid to Israel from 2019 to 2028. Notably, Israel is not a NATO member, hence NATO countries are not obligated to assist it in case of military actions and become involved in war.
Biden contradicted himself by stating that Russia should join NATO. “I think we need to chart a rational path for Russia... excuse me, for Ukraine, to be able to aspire to join NATO,” he said.
