Shinuhayr-Tatev Highway to Be Renovated

Design documents have been ordered for the renovation of the Shinuhayr-Tatev section of the Iran-Armenia highway. This information was provided by the press service of the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of Armenia in response to a query from Sputnik Armenia.

"Project budgeting documentation has been commissioned for the renovation work on the Shinuhayr-Tatev highway section, and these documents are currently in the development phase. After receiving a positive conclusion from the expert examination, the competitive process for acquiring renovation works for the specified section will be organized in accordance with the relevant procedures," the response from the ministry states.

Regarding new issues arising in another section, Tatev-Kapan, the ministry states that these are related to the road's excessive overload. The state commission has not yet accepted the submitted construction object for operation.

"The construction company will eliminate the detected deficiencies at its own expense," officials from the ministry noted.

In November 2022, it was reported that the road was in a deplorable condition. At that time, in response to our inquiry, the ministry indicated that the road would be renovated in 2023.

It should be noted that following Azerbaijan's closure of the Goris-Kapan road, the connection with Iran is being made via the Shinuhayr-Tatev-Kapan road. The Shinuhayr-Tatev section features mountain passes, and the road is narrow, significantly complicating traffic flow. The operation of the Shamb-Ltsen-Tatev road should resolve the existing issues. The construction of this road is expected to be completed by the end of 2023.
