Georgian President Calls for Strengthening Control on the Russian Border

Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has called on Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili to convene an urgent meeting of the National Security Council in light of recent events in neighboring Russia.

“Unfortunately, I have not received any information from security agencies about the protection of the state border; not only have I not received information, but I have not even been able to establish communication with the heads of security agencies. Therefore, I am compelled to approach the Prime Minister of Georgia with a proposal to convene the National Security Council immediately,” she said during a press conference on Saturday.

According to her, the meeting of the National Security Council should address the issues of tightening control on the border with Russia and reviewing the visa regime.

Earlier today, the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs issued a statement asserting that there is no need to close the border with Russia.
