Georgia Excludes Saakashvili's Return to Politics
The former President of Georgia, Mikheil Saakashvili, will not be able to return to Georgian politics due to lacking Georgian citizenship. This was stated by the country's Minister of Justice, Rati Bregadze, as reported by TASS.
The minister made this announcement during a conversation with journalists. "Mikheil Saakashvili does not have Georgian citizenship; therefore, if he wants to be involved in Georgian politics, he must obtain Georgian citizenship," Bregadze said while commenting on Saakashvili's recent statement regarding his return to Georgian politics.
The head of the Ministry of Justice also criticized Saakashvili for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship in 2015 when he became the governor of the Odessa region in Ukraine, consequently losing his Georgian citizenship.
"When a person is a head of state and chief commander, and renounces his country's citizenship to become a citizen of another state and begins to serve that state, I believe it would have been better if he had remained a citizen of the country he started to serve," Bregadze concluded.
