Upper Lars Checkpoint Expanded with 39 Lanes Operational
The reconstruction works at the Upper Lars checkpoint on the Georgian-Russian border have been completed, now totaling around 39 traffic lanes. This information is reported by the press service of the International Association of Road Carriers.
According to the agency's announcement, the overall technical readiness of the checkpoint currently stands at 80%.
Twenty new buildings and structures have been erected, approximately 450,000 tons of metal constructions installed, 30 kilometers of internal engineering networks set up, and about 5,500 square meters of area asphalted.
Additionally, the construction readiness of all 39 traffic lanes outlined in the project has been ensured.
It was noted that in order to increase throughput and considering the constricted conditions, an exclusive scheme was employed for the arrangement of traffic lanes and passport control booths along the diagonals of the lanes. This decision has allowed for the separation of traffic flows based on vehicle types and enabled the installation of expanded infrastructure within a small area.
The 25 existing lanes have now been supplemented with 11 new lanes, and three more were launched on June 15. Thus, the total number of functional lanes has reached 39. Moreover, one lane will serve as a reserve to facilitate the transportation of construction materials for the completion of other construction works, including the checkpoint's enhancement, which will last until the end of the year.
The modernization of the checkpoint is being carried out under the directive of Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin. During a bilateral meeting with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on June 7, he mentioned that the checkpoint at the border with Georgia would soon operate with up to 39 lanes for vehicles, which would help eliminate traffic jams and ensure the normative passage of freight vehicles.
