Hungarian Foreign Minister: NATO Membership for a Warring Country Cannot Be on the Agenda

The question of Ukraine's accession to NATO should not be discussed at the alliance's summit scheduled for July, said Hungary's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto following the NATO Foreign Ministers' meeting in Oslo. This was reported by RIA Novosti.

“The membership of a warring country cannot be included on the agenda; I believe there is a consensus within a closed circle that a warring country should not be admitted,” said the head of Hungarian diplomacy.

He urged everyone not to deceive one another and not to create any timelines for the warring country. “You can convince the Ukrainians that they will receive some timeline for joining NATO at the summit, but that would be dishonest towards the Ukrainians. You cannot create illusions that are clearly not realizable,” Szijjarto said.

The minister emphasized that Budapest considers it unacceptable to train Ukrainian soldiers under the NATO flag, as the alliance must avoid direct confrontation with Russia.
