Discussion on Renaming Georgia in Kyiv
In the Ukrainian Parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, a bill has been introduced that proposes to abandon the Russified version of Georgia's name, «Грузія», and instead refer to the country as «Сакартвело» («Sakartvelo»).
According to the explanatory note attached to bill No. 9329, it is proposed to use the historical name «Сакартвело» in official documents, correspondence, and communications at official levels, as well as in publications by mass media, replacing the term «Грузія». Furthermore, the bill suggests referring to Georgians as «քարթվելներ» (Kartvelians).
The authors of the bill believe that the adoption of this document will promote closer ties between Kyiv and Tbilisi.
