US Calls Israeli National Security Minister's Conduct Provocative
The appearance of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir near the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem has been labeled provocative by the US State Department, as reported by РИА Новости.
Washington has expressed concern over the minister's "provocative visit" and the accompanying rhetoric. According to the State Department, such a "holy site" should not be used for political purposes.
The US State Department has urged all parties to treat the site with respect and reaffirmed their commitment to the historical status quo regarding the holy sites in Jerusalem. The department believes that the expansion of Israeli settlements on the West Bank presents an obstacle to regional settlement.
Earlier, it was reported that the European Union delegation in Israel canceled a diplomatic reception for Europe Day due to Minister Ben Gvir's alleged participation.
Itamar Ben Gvir heads the Jewish Power party (Otzma Yehudit) and is known for his hardline stance against Palestinians. He has consistently advocated for the implementation of the death penalty for attempts against Israelis and for the expulsion of Muslim Arabs deemed disloyal to Israel. He assumed office on January 25, 2023.
