Facebook fined 1.2 billion euros

Facebook's parent company Meta has been fined 1.2 billion euros for mishandling user data when it was transferred between Europe and the United States. This information has been reported by the BBC.

The fine, imposed by the Irish Data Protection Commission, is the largest penalty ever set under the EU's General Data Protection Regulation privacy laws. Meta has announced that it will appeal this "unfounded and unnecessary" decision.

Legal agreements developed by the European Commission include guarantees to ensure that personal data continues to be protected when transferred outside of Europe. However, there are concerns that these data flows still do not adequately protect Europeans, as privacy laws in the U.S. are weaker, and such data could become accessible to U.S. intelligence.

It has been reported that this decision does not affect Facebook's operations in the United Kingdom.
