Crisis of Sarsang Reservoir: Sudden Changes in Microclimate, Loss of Plant and Animal Species

The environmental crisis of the Sarsang Reservoir is manifested by sudden changes in the microclimate, drying up of springs, and loss of plant and animal species. This is reported by the Artsakh Information Headquarters.

Under the ongoing blockade of the Republic of Artsakh for 158 days, Azerbaijan has disrupted the only high-voltage power line supplying electricity from Armenia to Artsakh since January 9, affecting residents for 129 days. In such conditions, the Republic of Artsakh is forced to rely solely on its internal electricity generation infrastructure, of which approximately 70 percent is attributed to the hydropower station of the Sarsang Reservoir.

Consequently, the only large reservoir in the Republic of Artsakh is facing serious environmental issues, threatening its biodiversity and that of the surrounding environment. Specifically, there has been a significant reduction in the surface area of the reservoir and its evaporation and infiltration rates, which is the main cause of the changes in the local microclimate, leading to all negative consequences for the environment and agriculture.
