US Comments on Relations Between Armenia and Azerbaijan and Recent Negotiations
The United States is convinced that negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan are an important step forward. This was stated by Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, during a traditional press briefing, referring to the meeting held in Brussels between the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan.
“The US was not a party to these negotiations. However, as a continuation of the negotiations we hosted in Arlington, we continue to believe that they are an important step forward, and we maintain that lasting peace between these two countries is achievable,” Patel said.
It is worth mentioning that on May 14, a trilateral meeting took place in Brussels with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, European Council President Charles Michel, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. During the meeting, discussions were held on the unblocking of regional transportation and economic infrastructures, the delimitation and security of borders between the two countries, the agreement on the normalization of relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, the necessity to address the rights and security of the people of Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as issues regarding captives, missing persons, and other humanitarian matters.
Agreements were reached to continue discussions on June 1 in Chișinău within the framework of the European Political Community summit involving the Prime Minister of Armenia, the President of Azerbaijan, the President of France, the Chancellor of Germany, and the President of the European Council, as well as in July during the trilateral meetings in Brussels between the Prime Minister of Armenia, the President of Azerbaijan, and the President of the European Council.
