EU Regrets Renewal of Air Communication Between Russia and Georgia

The EU regrets that Georgia has not joined the European sanctions against the Russian aviation sector and is restoring air communication with the Russian Federation, stated EU chief diplomat Josep Borrell's official spokesperson, Peter Stano.

“This decision by the Georgian authorities raises concerns about Georgia’s path to EU membership in terms of adhering to the EU's foreign policy decisions, as provided for in the association agreement,” he said at a news briefing on Tuesday in Brussels.

According to Stano, Georgia has adhered to about 40% of the EU's decisions regarding external and security policy, which is already low compared to 31% this year.

“We regret this,” he said. Borrell's spokesman added that this week the “UN specialized agency, the International Civil Aviation Organization, has been in contact with the Georgian authorities to discuss the safety of the Russian aviation sector and Russian aircraft.”
