Captain Yeghishe Hakobyan to Remain in Custody Over Barracks Fire Case

The detention period of Captain Yeghishe Hakobyan, involved in the barracks fire case, has been extended. This information was reported by Pastinfo on its Telegram channel.

Earlier, Armenia's Prosecutor General Anna Vardapetyan addressed the fire incident at the military unit in the village of Azat, noting that currently, four individuals are in custody, facing charges for failing to fulfill their duties to ensure safety.

“At this moment, the representatives of the victims and their heirs have submitted requests, and we are in discussions regarding disagreements related to the investigations. The case has been under the scrutiny of the prosecution and my direct attention since the beginning. In this regard, we are thorough, as we have individuals in custody to ensure the proceedings are examined as swiftly as possible, but speed does not imply an investigation focused solely on a single version, as we are constantly criticized for only examining one theory,” the Prosecutor stated.

Vardapetyan emphasized that all theories are being examined: “The hypotheses raised by the parents are also being considered,” she added.

Recall that on January 19, around 01:30, a fire broke out in the barracks of the engineering battalion stationed in the village of Azat, Gegharkunik Province. As a result of the fire, 15 individuals lost their lives, and 7 service members were injured.

Immediately following the incident, the commander of the 2nd Army Corps and other high-ranking military personnel were dismissed from their positions.
